    • I did this project at the Technical University of Dresden (Germany) during the wintersemester of 2006/2007 in my minor field of studies. The subject was to choose anything in Dresden and first work out a presentation. Next, the project needed to be presented as a web application whereas the technology, design was fully for us students to create and implement.

My topic of choice was the cinema UFA Crystal Palace in Dresden as an example for the architectural style of the deconstrutivism from Coop Himmelblau.

At that point in time HTML5 was not available, hence there was no winner in regards to the JavaScript library to choose. This freedom to descide on our own which technology to choose made me have a look around what there is that could be learned in a short period of time but would not lessen the expressiveness to put in on the web. In the end it was the only subject at the faculty of computer science that was focussed on design so I wanted to be very free in regards to design elements (drop shadows, animations, …). Since Flash had the advantage of being more or less cross browser compatible compared to HTML and CSS, which saved a lot of testing and debugging time, plus the IDE support with Flash MX was secured. And taken into account all that Adobe did to push programming support and the technology itself forward, made me descide to choose Flash. I thought that Flash would survive a long time as one of the best web technologies after ActionScript 3 came out. Well, sometimes the course the web is taking is not forseeable. Still, Flash is used in a lot of web applications as fallback for videos, I guess this will only be over once IE9 can be announced as the oldest browser the clients use.
